Background

Climate change and malnutrition are two of the greatest challenges facing humanity today and are intrinsically intertwined.  Through the strategic integration of these priorities, a comprehensive solution can be provided to concurrently address two major obstacles to sustainable development. The CFS Voluntary Guidelines on Food Systems and Nutrition (VGFSyN) provide a systemic, multi-sectoral science and evidence-based approach to implementing interventions to deliver healthy diets and positively impact all three dimensions of sustainable development. However, the persistent divide between the climate and nutrition communities leads to fragmentation in policy and action implementation.

This side event presented the Initiative on Climate Action and Nutrition (I-CAN) and launched two new reports highlighting the latest developments in evidence base - FAO's Climate Action and Nutrition Pathways to Impact and the I-CAN Baseline Assessment. The panel discussion and open forum led by the GAFSP showcased examples of integrated climate-nutrition actions and strategies implemented across diverse projects driven by recipient countries, and by forest and farmers producer organizations in response to climate and nutrition challenges, as well as the need of financial resources to support these strategies. The event was a pivotal step towards removing financial barriers for integrated action and contributing to shaping the roadmap to COP28.

The event was co-organized by Canada, Germany, New Zealand, The United Kingdom, FAO, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition,Global Agriculture & Food Security Program (GAFSP), Forest and Farm Facility, Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition, World Health Organization, SUN Movement and the UN-Nutrition Secretariat.
