Background

Access to nutritious, diverse and safe food is a fundamental pillar of health, providing the necessary nutrients to prevent undernutrition, over nutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. In contrast, the consumption of processed foods high in sugar, salt and fats can harm people’s health, increasing the risk of overweight, type 2-diabetes, cancer and other non-communicable diseases. Healthy diets composed of mostly plant-based, fresh, local, minimally processed foods can reduce the double burden of malnutrition and lessen environmental footprints. Employing a rights-based approach, with a focus on the right to food and the right to a healthy environment, can support more sustainable actions on climate, biodiversity and nutrition. Access to adequate, safe and nutritious diets is critical if we are to uphold human rights, improve people’s health and limit biodiversity loss and global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Objectives

  • To highlight the role of human rights in providing an enabling environment for the consumption of healthy diets from sustainable agrifood systems to prevent all forms of malnutrition and diet-related noncommunicable diseases and reduce environmental impact.
  • To provide a platform to showcase best practices on how to integrate the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity into national nutrition agendas, programmes and policies, promoting healthy diets from sustainable agrifood systems.
  • To share knowledge on linkages between nutrition and biodiversity, and how the promotion of healthy diets from sustainable agrifood systems can be integrated within climate adaptation and mitigation plans, biodiversity strategies, health and trade policies.
  • To provide insights for CFS discussions and promote CFS products towards achieving food and nutrition security and sustainable development for all in the face of climate change, using a holistic approach to transforming agrifood systems, and ensuring multi-stakeholder participation.
