With the long-term aim of improving the health and well-being of all Ecuadorians, Ecuador’s Vice-Minister of Health Dr. Fernando Cornejo announced the adoption of five SMART commitments under the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. These commitments include:
- Generate environments that favour population health
- Encourage breastfeeding
- Provide comprehensive health services and health education for pregnant women, children under the age of 5, and school-age children
- Promote community and inter-sectoral participation in public policy
- Promote food sovereignty
Several efforts are already underway in Ecuador to improve the health of its citizens, including regulating the labelling of processed foods, taxing sweetened beverages, and prohibiting the sale of high sugar, salt and fat products.
