On 6 June 2017, Norway established the Global Action Network on Sustainable Food from the Ocean for Food Security and Nutrition, becoming the first country to establish an action network under the Nutrition Decade. This action network is a direct follow-up of the Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition 2016–2025.
As described in paragraph 59 of the Nutrition Decade’s Work Programme, “action networks are informal coalitions of countries aimed at accelerating and aligning efforts around specific topics linked to one or more action areas of the Nutrition Decade, through advocating for the establishment of policies and legislation, allowing the exchange of practices and experiences, highlighting successes and lessons learnt, and providing mutual support to accelerate implementation.”
Whether at regional or global level, action networks should operate under the leadership of a government institution and engage civil society, academia and the private sector, as appropriate. Tools to assist are available upon request from the joint FAO/WHO Secretariat.
